Resident Evil Posts Franchise-Best Opening Weekend

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil closed out its opening weekend with $60 million domestic from 3,684 locations, plus $48.3 million overseas, for a $108.3 million global debut against a $75 million budget. The Associated Press reports it’s the biggest opening in the franchise’s history.

Resident Evil: Afterlife technically out-grossed it unadjusted back in 2010 with $60.1 million domestic, but this is the first time in 24 years a Resident Evil movie has come close to that number again. It’s also the biggest opening of Cregger’s career, ahead of Weapons and Barbarian.

The movie held a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore through the weekend. It had the field mostly to itself — Practical Magic 2 finished a distant second with $12.2 million domestic.
