It Follows Sequel Wraps Filming

Filming has officially wrapped on They Follow, the sequel to It Follows. Production company Curious Gremlin shared the news on Instagram, though no photos or details from the shoot were included.

Maika Monroe returns as Jay, and David Robert Mitchell is back writing and directing. Disasterpeace is composing the score again as well. The cast also includes Jackie Earle Haley, Justine Lupe, Anna Mirodin, Jayne Taini, Michael Gandolfini, Tom Pecinka, Melora Walters, Ben Krieger, Natalie Shinnick, Jan Hoag, and Naomi Ackie.

No release date has been announced.

It Follows is one of my favorite films of all time, so while we wait on the sequel, here are a few lesser known facts about how the original got made.

A few things you might not know about It Follows

• The idea came from a recurring nightmare director David Robert Mitchell had as a kid, of a figure slowly walking toward him and never stopping.
• The whole movie was shot in Michigan, mostly around Detroit, Clawson, and Sterling Heights, on a budget of just $1.3 million.
• The mix of old TVs, retro cars, and modern phones on screen isn’t a mistake. Mitchell deliberately blurred the time period so the film would feel like it was happening in a dream.
• The interiors for the abandoned building where Jeff shows Jay the entity were shot at Detroit’s Packard Automotive Plant. The crew had originally planned to use a different location, but had to change plans after an actual murder happened there and the site became a real crime scene.
• The movie theater scene was filmed at the real Redford Theatre, a historic 1928 movie palace in Detroit that also once hosted the premiere of The Evil Dead.
• Jay’s name is a nod to Jamie Lee Curtis, and the entity’s slow, unstoppable walk is a direct echo of Michael Myers in Halloween.
