5 New Horrors To Watch This Weekend

A few new horror movies and shows landed this week, in theaters and at home. Here’s what’s new.

American Horror Story: 13 (FX and Hulu)

American Horror Story is back. Season 13 premiered Thursday night with three episodes on FX and Hulu. Ryan Murphy says it pulls from all of the past seasons, with Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts and more returning, some of them in several roles. Three more episodes drop next Thursday, then two a week until the finale on October 29. Forbes has the full episode schedule.

My Sad Dead (Netflix)

This four-episode Argentinian horror series from director Pablo Larraín hit Netflix Thursday. It’s based on stories by Mariana Enriquez. Mercedes Morán plays Ema, a retired doctor who can see the dead. When her troubled niece arrives and three teenagers are murdered, the dead start haunting the whole neighborhood. Stephen King has already given it a shout-out. Deadline has the trailer.

Family (in theaters and on demand)

Benjamin Finkel’s debut hits select theaters and VOD on Friday. A 10-year-old girl moves into a new home and starts to believe a malevolent spirit is turning her parents against her. Ruth Wilson plays the mother. iHorror has the trailer.

Never After Dark (in theaters)

Dave Boyle’s J-horror style ghost story opens in select theaters Friday from Magnolia Pictures. Moeka Hoshi from Shōgun plays a medium sent to a remote inn with one rule: never stay after dark. Stephen King called it “amazing and haunting.” Variety has more.

Bloody Tennis (Shudder)

Shudder’s newest original premieres Friday. This German film from Nikias Chryssos follows a young player who joins an elite tennis academy and finds out the school is hiding some dark secrets. High On Films has more on Shudder’s September releases.
