REVIEW: Sasquatches by Joseph C. Stewart

BY: DAVEY

Sasquatches: Phantoms of the Forest is Joseph C. Stewart’s field journal from two years spent studying a group of Sasquatches in the woods of northern Michigan and Tennessee. I had a great time with it, and it’s an easy recommendation for anyone who loves cryptid lore.

Stewart is a Michigan native with a science degree and interests in anthropology, psychology, and animal behavior. His own Sasquatch encounter happened on a hunting trip with his father in 1968, and he’s spent more than fifty years tracking them since. He’s also put decades into ghost hunting and UFO research with groups like MUFON.

Much of the book reads like a diary, built from Stewart’s journal entries during 2013 and 2014. He covers where the creatures live, what they eat, how they sleep, and how they might communicate through stone throwing and wooden glyphs. There are also photos of strange tipi-like stick structures and a look at where Sasquatches could fit in ape evolution.

I’ve spent plenty of time tromping through the woods to visit horror filming locations, and this book made me want to go back and look a little closer. The journal sections were my favorite part, and I’d happily read a whole second volume of them.
