Blair Witch 2, Book of Shadows – Filming Locations

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 came out in October 2000 and got buried by the reviews. The locations are still worth knowing, especially if you live around here. It was shot over about 44 days in the spring of 2000, and almost all of it happened in and around Baltimore rather than out in Burkittsville.

Here is what is where, and what you can still get to.

Kim’s Cemetery

20901 Mt Zion Rd, Freeland, MD 21053

Jeff’s crew picks up psychic goth Kim at this cemetery that’s meant to be a standing for the Burkittsville Cemetery. This cemetery is on the border between MD and PA, unlike the cemetery from the original Blair Witch Project, which is of course the actual Burkittsville MD cemetery.

Clipper Mill, the Tractor Building

2039 Clipper Park Road, Baltimore, MD 21211

Jeff’s warehouse loft, and the setting for most of the movie. The brick Tractor Building went up in 1916 and was used to assemble heavy machinery, cranes and gun houses.

The interior scenes were shot under the skylights at the back right corner of the roof, which is also where Tristen ends up hanging. The door and the footbridge you see in the film are on the south side, facing Druid Hill Park. Street View does not cover that side, but the 3D view on Google Maps does.

The building has been sitting vacant for years, so you can only see it from the outside. On the DVD commentary the director points out that the Baltimore skyline is visible just past the building, which is why every exterior shot is from the one side with trees on it.

Gwynns Falls Leakin Park

4921 Windsor Mill Road, Baltimore, MD 21207

The woods scenes. The crew spent about three weeks shooting here, built around one huge red oak. It is one of the largest urban parks in the country, it is open to the public, and it is maybe fifteen minutes from downtown.

The Rustin Parr ruins

Nothing to find. The stone ruins the group camps in were built out of styrofoam and taken down when filming wrapped. People still go looking for them.

The real Griggs House from the first film was in Patapsco Valley State Park, and it was demolished in 2003. That one at least has a foundation left.

The hospital scenes

Tristen’s hospital scene was shot at an abandoned sanitarium in Baltimore that has never been publicly named.

Jeff’s hospital footage is not even from Maryland. Artisan ordered it shot weeks before release, and it was done at the Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center on Randall’s Island in New York City. It is a working state facility and it is closed to the public.

Some of the murder footage was also a late addition, shot in director Joe Berlinger’s backyard after the rest of the film was done.

Doing it in a day

Clipper Mill and Leakin Park are both in the city and sit about twenty minutes apart, so you can see both in one afternoon.
