Eggers Lands…Romeo & Juliet Adaptation?

Robert Eggers is making a new movie, and it’s not another folk-horror period piece. Focus Features has won a bidding war for the rights to have Eggers direct a new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.

TheWrap reports that A24, Sony, and Warner Bros. all bid for the project before Focus came out on top. The deal was still closing in on being finalized at the time of the report, but the studio and project are locked in.

This keeps Eggers’ run with Focus going. The studio released Nosferatu and The Northman, and handled international releases for The Witch and The Lighthouse. Eggers is best known for dread-soaked, meticulously researched period horror, so a Shakespeare tragedy is new ground for him.

The announcement comes before his werewolf film Werwulf has even come out. That one is set for a Christmas release. No cast, script details, or shooting timeline for Romeo and Juliet have been announced yet.
