Eggers Reveals First Werwulf Trailer
The first trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf is out, and it looks exactly like you’d expect from him (and we mean that in the BEST way). Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as a man cursed with lycanthropy in medieval England, forced to join a knight’s crusade to wipe out the countryside’s wolves. Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson round out the cast.
Set in the early 1300s, the film uses modified Old English dialogue and a desaturated, muddy color palette that fits right alongside Eggers’ other period work. TheWrap reports that Eggers described Werwulf as the darkest thing he’s written, after already going dark with Nosferatu. The story pulls from real history too — England’s 14th-century campaign to wipe out wolves to protect the wool trade, along with old werewolf accusation cases.
Focus Features has Werwulf opening on Christmas Day. It’s Eggers’ next film after Nosferatu, and comes right before his previously announced Romeo and Juliet adaptation.
