Barrera Lays Out Her Scream Terms

Melissa Barrera says she would return to the Scream franchise, but only if it leaves Spyglass’s hands. Asked directly in a new interview, she said she’s open to playing Sam Carpenter again, just not with the company that fired her from Scream 7 in 2023 after she posted about Palestine.

TheWrap reports that Barrera accused Spyglass leadership of deliberately mischaracterizing her after the firing. “They made it a point to label me something that I’m not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right,” she said.

She made clear that even an apology wouldn’t change her answer. She said she wouldn’t go back to work with Spyglass, and added she doesn’t think the company is capable of apologizing anyway. She would consider returning if the franchise moved to “hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more.”

None of this means a change is coming. Spyglass still holds the rights to Scream, and there’s no indication that’s shifting soon. But it’s the most direct thing Barrera has said publicly since her firing, and it puts to rest any idea that this is a closed door on her end.
