Virus (1999) – Filming Locations
Where Virus was filmed in Virginia: the Newport News waterfront, where the film’s ghost ship was docked.
Part of Virus was shot in Hampton Roads in the spring of 1997. The crew used a retired Navy ship and filmed at sea in the Chesapeake Bay.
Newport News Waterfront
Address: Downtown waterfront, Newport News, VA 23607
The retired USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg was docked here and played the Russian research ship Volkov. The city leased waterfront land and buildings to the production.
Nothing from the shoot is left. The ship was sunk off Key West in 2009 and is now an artificial reef that divers can visit.
