Critics Call Resident Evil Brutal And Funny

The first reactions to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil are out, and they are good.

The film screened this week ahead of its September 18 release from Sony. It is rated R for strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout.

Zach Pope called it a “near PERFECT Resident Evil experience” and summed it up as “Brutal. Funny. Gory.” Jeremy Crabb said it was “consistently exhilarating, hilarious (sometimes to a fault), and tense.” Reel Rejects called it “masterfully directed.”

Several people noted the movie does not follow the games closely. Mark Cassidy said it “may not feature recognizable characters/storylines” but still called it the most faithful take yet.

Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier. Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Johnno Wilson and Kali Reis co-star. Cregger directed and co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten.

Resident Evil opens in theaters on September 17th. We’ll be there opening night to cover!
