The Sixth Sense – Filming Locations

The Sixth Sense – Filming Locations

The Sixth Sense was shot almost entirely in Philadelphia, M. Night Shyamalan’s hometown. The city’s rowhouses, churches, and graveyards do a lot of the work here. Almost every frame is brick, stone, or a cemetery, and most of the key spots are still standing.

Cole’s house

2302 St. Alban’s Place, Philadelphia, PA

Cole and his mom live in this small rowhouse, which faces into an inner courtyard. The bench across the courtyard, where Malcolm sits to watch Cole, is a prop the production left behind after filming wrapped. It’s reportedly still there. The block sits in a section of the city once nicknamed Devil’s Pocket.

Malcolm’s house

2006 Delancey Place, Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Malcolm Crowe’s townhouse sits on this block in Society Hill, just south of Rittenhouse Square. The row dates to the early 1800s. It also shows up in Trading Places, and Shyamalan returned to the same neighborhood years later for Glass and The Happening.

Cole’s school

1420 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA

The exterior of Cole’s school, St. Anthony Academy in the film, is Pierce College. The walk Cole and Malcolm take to get there passes through South Carlisle Street and the intersection of North 21st and Green.

St. Augustine’s Church

243 N Lawrence St, Philadelphia, PA

This is the church Cole retreats to, and where he and Malcolm have their long conversation near the end of the film. It sits near the entrance to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and dates back to 1848, after the original building was burned down during the anti-Catholic riots of 1844.

Shiloh Baptist Church

Christian Street, Philadelphia, PA

Cole and his mom are stuck in traffic outside this church when he passes on a message from her mother. It’s one of the quieter, more devastating scenes in the film, and it plays out right on the street.

Striped Bass restaurant

1500 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA

The restaurant where Malcolm keeps an anniversary appointment with his wife was Striped Bass, inside a former brokerage building. It closed not long after filming and reopened as Butcher and Singer, which is still open today.

Birthday party house

2408 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA

The house used for Cole’s disastrous birthday party scene is a few blocks from Malcolm’s place.

The parts that aren’t in Philadelphia

Almost the whole film stays within a few blocks of Center City and Society Hill, but a couple of scenes broke from the city. The murdered girl’s house was shot on 47th Street in Chicago, and the hospital scenes were filmed at Bryn Mawr Hospital, just outside Philadelphia.

Every rowhouse on this list is somebody’s home. Stick to the sidewalk if you go looking.
