Davey, your host

October is officially here. This week’s Make It Weird Wednesday starts close to home. The real house from the ending of The Blair Witch Project stood in my own neighborhood, so I had to talk about it, along with how a new horror movie is borrowing Blair Witch’s famous marketing playbook. From there I get into the 2,000 pound puppet behind Resident Evil, the real medieval wolf hunt behind Robert Eggers’ Werwulf, and the most hated horror sequel ever made. Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Also new on the site: the Critic’s Checklist, pulled from my upcoming mini-book How to Watch a Horror Movie. Type in the movie you’re watching and click through twelve steps for a thoughtful, fair critique, with a slime bar that fills up as you go. There’s a printable PDF too, and it’s a great place to start if you want to try reviewing for us.

I also reviewed two of last weekend’s new releases, Family and Bloody Tennis, and our Tomes of Terror shelf got its first review from a new contributor.

Tell me what you want more of. Just hit reply. We are also looking for submissions, so if you want to help grow our graveyard, give us a chant.

Make It Weird Wednesday Make It Weird Wednesday: Puppets, Wolves and the Blair Witch Playbook

Episode two. A Blair Witch story from my own backyard, the giant puppet behind Resident Evil, and the true history behind Werwulf.

  Family Review: Family (2026)

Benjamin Finkel’s debut is a moody, sad slow burn with a standout turn from Ruth Wilson. Worth a rental if you liked Relic or Hereditary.

Sam from Trick r Treat Michael Dougherty Is Bringing Sam Back

Trick ’r Treat’s Sam turns 30 and gets his own official home, with new shorts, artist collaborations and a merch shop all October.

Werwulf Eggers Reveals First Werwulf Trailer

The first look at Robert Eggers’ werewolf movie is here, and it looks exactly like a Robert Eggers movie should.

Twilight of the Dead Kate Beckinsale Leads Romero’s Final Zombie Film

Beckinsale has joined Twilight of the Dead, the zombie film George Romero conceived before his death.

Saw Mike Nelson Lands Next Saw Film

The director of this weekend’s Beware Boiúna is taking over Saw, with James Wan and Jason Blum producing.

Bloody Tennis Review: Bloody Tennis (2026)

Shudder’s tennis academy horror goes all in on gore and dark humor. I’m not a big Suspiria fan, and this one won me over anyway.

Tomes of Terror

Two new reads on the shelf this week. Vivica Viscera, our newest reviewer, took on When We Spoke to the Dead by Ilise S. Carter, about how ghosts gave American women a voice. And Van Helsing and His Kin by Daniel O’Brien follows the famous vampire hunter through nearly a century of film and TV, ending with a look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Want to join Vivica? We are still looking for book and film reviewers. If you love horror and want to write about it, reach out on our Summon Us page.
